It is said that eating right is the key to getting clear skin. However, a lot of people have observed that they get acne once they start to incorporate protein powder as a part of their diet. But is there a relationship between protein powders and acne? Let's find out.
But first, is it safe to consume protein powder?
We all have our doubts before starting any protein powder. Especially if you're from an Indian household, you would know how parents often look at it with suspicion.
However, experts say adding protein powder to your diet is completely okay if you choose the right product, and consume the right amount.
Debjani Gupta, a nutritionist and wellness expert from Mumbai, explains that protein powders are powdered forms of protein that come from plants (soybeans, peas, peanuts, rice) or milk (casein or whey protein).
"The powders may also include other ingredients such as added sugars, artificial flavouring, thickeners, vitamins and fortified with some minerals," she says.
"Protein powder is an easy way to get more protein daily. One can blend it into a shake or smoothie, have it in water or milk, sprinkle it into the breakfast porridge or add it to baked goods like bread or muffins," Debjani adds.
Why is having protein so important?
Protein, protein, protein. If you feel like there's a lot of chatter around this word lately, well, you're not alone. But why is everyone talking about this compound, and why is it so important for your body? Let us break it down for you.
Building and repairing tissues
Protein is a fundamental component of muscles, bones, skin, and blood. It helps repair and build tissues, which is crucial for growth and recovery from injuries.
Research published in the Journal of Sports Sciences in 2011 highlights that protein intake is essential for muscle repair and growth, especially after exercise.
Energy source
Have you ever noticed that you get a jolt of energy after that protein shake?
Well, this is because while carbohydrates and fats are the primary energy sources, proteins can also be broken down to provide energy, especially when other sources are depleted.
Transport and storage
Proteins help transport nutrients and other substances throughout the body. For example, haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells, transports oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.
Maintaining pH and fluid balance
Proteins help maintain the body's pH balance and fluid balance, preventing conditions like acidosis and oedema.
Aids in weight loss
Consuming protein makes you feel satiated for a longer time than any other source of compound. Hence, you eat less and it will help you to lose weight faster.
But can protein powder give you ance?
By now we know that protein is essential for your body, but if you see a terrible breakout after consuming your favourite protein powder, its ingredients list is to be blamed, according to experts.
Experts answer
Dietician Rashi Tantia, HOD of dietetics at Metro Hospital, Faridabad, tells India Today, "Not all people who eat protein powder get pimples. Variations in skin types, overall health, and heredity could be the cause of this discrepancy. Certain plant-based protein powders, such as those derived from rice, hemp, or peas, may be less likely to cause acne because they don't include hormones or dairy proteins."
Likely, the protein powder won't have a big impact on acne if the user follows a well-balanced diet and maintains a good standard of living and skincare. Rashi says that even if protein powder is consumed, acne outbreaks can be avoided with proper hydration and skincare practices.
